Hear about Dan’s experience working as a peer mentor in the emergency department.

NAMI Connects is a peer-based, mental health support, and navigation program uniquely designed for those who enter hospital emergency departments. In this program, Peer Mentors support adult peers admitted to one of the metro area’s Providence Emergency Departments (NE Portland, SW Portland, Milwaukie, Oregon City) for urgent psychiatric care.

NAMI Connects Peer Mentors give their time to assure that peers and their families feel heard, and understand that they are not alone. They offer a listening ear, empathy, their own personal story, and information about other programs within NAMI Multnomah. Peers are helped to feel empowered and learn to advocate for themselves, navigate the community’s system of care, and access opportunities for ongoing support and education.
